BLACK SUNDAY REMEMBERED The 3rd anniversary of Black Sunday is tomorrow January 23 where FDNYs Lieutenant Curt Meyran and Lieutenant John Bellew Ladder 27 lost their lives in the Line of Duty. Additionally Rescue 3 Firefighters Jeff Cool and Joey DiBernardo as well as Ladder 27 Firefighters Brendan Cawley and Eugene Stalowski were very critically injured…but survived and have gone on to instruct other firefighters across the USA on that fire-and what lessons were learned. Some positive changes came out from that fire including the issuance of personal escape systems to all FDNY FFs. Following that and very recently an FDNY Firefighter trapped on the top floor of a working row home in Brooklyn was able to save himself with his issued personal escape system. It was the first instance of a Firefighter using the device to escape since the escape systems were issued. The FF managed to hook the device to a window sill. He lowered himself far enough for other firefighters to grab him. Sometimes when FFs give their lives some things change. Below is a link to an in-depth article New York Magazine related to that fire from about a year ago. The article can be compared to the changes that their deaths and injuries created. It is also an important piece for NON-firefighters to read…such as elected officials city hall dwellers etc. Remember the Line of Duty deaths of FDNY Lieutenants Meyran and Bellew along with FF Richard Sclafani who was killed in Brooklyn at a separate fire on Black Sunday January 23 2005.nymag.comnewsfeatures26574index.htmlwww.cdc.govnioshfirereportsface200503.html
