On December 24 2007 at approximately 2320 hrs dispatch toned out for an activated fire alarm at a home on Old Post Road. Engine231OIC BN Rose Engine232OIC DC Graglia Engine233OIC Capt Pruim Truck241OIC FF J.Ciampoand Rescue 242OIC Ex Chief Pettit responded to the assignment. While enroute dispatch reported that they received a call from the homeowner reporting a fire in the kitchen from an unattended candle. Sgt. D.Murphy 2114 arrived on scene and confirmed a small kitchen fire that was partially extinguished with a smoke condition throughout the 1st floor. Engine231 arrived on scene and was advised to come directly in to investigate with thermal cameras and a water can. Batt. Chief Rose249 established Command while Lt. Zivkovich led the Engine crew inside. Truck241 was advised to set up for positive pressure ventilation and send a crew to check for extension. The fire appears to have been ignited by an unattended candle that had been on top of a cloth runner on a wooden counter top. An area approximately 2- 3 ft long had considerable burn damage as well as black smoke damage visible on the kitchen ceiling. Luckily the homeowner had returned home prior to going to church and located the fire in its beginning stages. After ventilation was completed Command downsized the assignment and released all units. Just another reminder of the hazards associated with candles.-230
