On Saturday December 1 2007 at approximately 1502 hrs Tower Ladder241 was dispatched mutual aid to Merk Medco in Franklin Lakes. Merk Medco is a large multi floor commercial office complex. Initial reports were a smoke condition on the third floor. Chief Murphy and Deputy Chief Brock responded in 230 followed by Truck 241OIC Lt Gaeta. Upon the trucks arrival they were instructed by Command Chief Donch 330 to ladder the building and inspect the roof area. Chief Murphy and Deputy Chief Brock were sent to the third floor to meet Operations Officer Asst. Chief Bohny340. Once on the third floor a moderate smoke condition and class A burning odor was located throughout. The roof crew reported that they located a roofing company conducting work with tar although the conditions inside did not seem to be from tarring. Upon further inspection the roof crew reported smoke coming from around a roof top drain. Upon removing the roofing material and foam insulation they noticed embers starting to fly. While the roof crew began to open up the interior crews were able to get above the drop ceilings and investigate with thermal imaging cameras to check for downward spread. After all was removed and extinguished with water cans it was determined to be wood that surrounded the drain area that was super heated by the contractors causing it and the foam insulation to burn creating smoke into the third floor below. Shortly thereafter Command began to start downsizing the assignment. Wyckoff Engine 233 was also assigned as a cover company to Franklin Lakes Firehouse.Another good showing of our departments working together and making a great stop. Thanks to THE BOROUGH OF for the opportunity.-230
