pnbsppdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10pt aligncenterbuBEREAVEMENT NOTICEubdivdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10pt aligncenterbnbspbdivdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Wyckoff Ex-Departmental Chief Theodore ldquoTedrdquo Hayunga passed away on November 9 2008 at the age of 94 in Virginia Beach Virginia.nbspTed joined the Wyckoff Fire Department on June 13 1938.nbspHis brothers Ben and Fred also joined at that time along with Emil ldquoBuckyrdquo Gabriel Howard Woodbury Samuel Braen Jack Shepard and Bruce Scott.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Early in his career as a volunteer he recognized the need for training which he avidly pushed for and was a leading advocate of hands-on training until his retirement.nbspHe was a no nonsense person with strict rules and regulations and raised the standards of the Wyckoff Fire Department.nbspTed was instrumental in guiding the Wyckoff Fire Department towards more modern firefighting equipment and techniques.nbspSince the Ridgewood Fire Department was taking their hook and ladder truck out of service Ted discussed purchasing the truck with Chief Sam Braen.nbspIt was decided to purchase the truck and it was the start of a truck company in Wyckoff.nbspAfter purchasing the 1923 American LaFrance aerial ladder from Ridgewood it was housed at Midway Garage which was owned by Ted and his partner Ellie Philpot.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Ted was the first Assistant Chief from 1950 through 1955.nbspOn two separate occasions during his term as Chief of Company 1 he arranged for weekend training evolutions at the New Haven Connecticut Fire Department Training Facility.nbspThe practical lessons learned there were incorporated into the Wyckoff training regimen and are still practiced today.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp In 1955 the Town Hall and firehouse burned downed.nbspThe plans to build a new firehouse were to have the Town Hall and firehouse in the same building.nbspTed convinced them to build the firehouse at its present location behind Town Hall on Scott Plaza.nbspIn 1957 he saw the need for a more modern truck for the truck company.nbspHe went to Middletown New Jersey to look at a 1937 American LaFrance Quad.nbspHe convinced the town fathers to purchase the truck and the members of the truck company completely refurbished this unit and put it in service.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Ted was the main apparatus repair person during all the years he was a Wyckoff fireman.nbspThanks to him the equipment was well maintained and hardly out of service.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp During his tenure as Assistant Chief and Chief of the Wyckoff Fire Department he was very instrumental in building the North Jersey Fire Training Academy in Wayne.nbspHe and other members of the Wyckoff Fire Department became instructors and were very well known in the fire service.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Ted was very proud of the Wyckoff Fire Department and always strived to have as many men as possible to represent Wyckoff in numerous parades of the era.nbspThis paid off on many occasions when the department won the coveted Moon Mullins Trophy for Best in Parade.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp He was a great believer in the mission of the fire service.nbspIn addition to his life membership in Company 1 he was also a Life Member of the New Jersey State Firemenrsquos Association the New Jersey State Exempt Firemenrsquos Association the New Jersey New York Volunteer Firemenrsquos Association and the North Jersey Volunteer Firemenrsquos Association.nbspTed was also instrumental in establishing the Northwest Bergen Mutual Aid Association.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbspnbsp Ted was predeceased by his wife of 74 years Margaret in February 2008.nbspHe is survived by two daughters.divdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10ptnbspdivdiv stylemargin 0in 0in 10pt-230div
