On Thursday 10042007 at 1153 hours Wyckoff Communications dispatched Wyckoffs Bravest for an activated carbon monoxide alarm at 329 Newtown Road. Chief Murphy 230 arrived on scene establishing command soon followed by Engine 232 OIC Lt. Hendrickson and Engine 231 OIC DC. T. Brock. Initial crews performed a primary search of the residence and concluded the alarm activation was due to a low battery. Command released all units a short time later. While units were returning Wyckoff Communications dispatched the bravest to 126 Ullman Avenue at 1212 hours after receiving a 911 call reporting a structure fire. Chief Murphy 230 arrived on scene and advised responding units that he had a heavy smoke condition on the first floor of the 2.5 story residence with active fire showing. Engine 231 OIC DC. T. Brock was ordered to connect to the hydrant and lay in. Engine 232 OIC LT. Hendrickson arrived moments later and secured the water source. Chief Murphy requested an automatic second alarm response bringing in an engine from Hawthorne Midland Park and a FAST team from Ho-Ho-Kus. Waldwick Truck 641 Allendale Engine 935 and Franklin Lakes Engine 335 were assigned as cover companies. As search crews entered the structure they encountered heavy smoke and zero visibility. The search crews located the source of the fire a 5 gallon pail of lacquer and varnish which was fully engulfed. Crews were able to extinguish the pail immediately and prevent any further extension. Crews from Tower Ladder 241 and Rescue 242 assisted with venting the home and performed salvage and overhaul. As the scene became under control Chief Murphy started to release all second alarm assignments. At this time it appears that the fire originated in the first floor living room of the home while contractors were in the process of varnishing the wood floor. Due to the highly combustible materials being used a FLASH fire originated and ignited the flooring and then the 5 gallon pail of varnish. After securing the residence all crews were released. The home suffered severe smoke and heat damage. Thanks to the mutual aid for your assistance.
