Storms Bring Another Close Call to Wyckoff
Tuesday, June 30, 2009
-
At 16:47 hours today, dispatch toned out a general alarm assignment for residence on Dartmouth Street struck by lightening.   The caller who was a neighbor reported that there was visible smoke coming from the residence.

Chief Murphy #230 responded into the scene along with Engine #232, Engine #231 (OIC Capt. Fisher), Engine #233 (OIC FF. Graham), Tower Ladder #241 (OIC BC Vanderplaat) and Res2cue #242.

Upon arrival Chief Murphy reported that a shed within close proximity to the residence had been struck by lightening and caught fire.  With the help of a concerned neighbor, most of the fire was extinguished with a garden hose prior to crews arrival.   All units returned to service by 17:18 hours.

At 18:05 hours, dispatch toned out a general alarm assignment for an oven fire on Brookside Avenue.

Chief Murphy #230, DC. Rose #239, Engine #231 (OIC BC Vanderplaat), Tower Ladder #241 (OIC Capt. Fisher), Engine #232, Engine #233 and Res2cue #242 all responded into the scene.

Upon patrols arrival, it was determined that the fire was actually a burned oven mitt that had caught fire on top of the stove.

The scene was immediately downsized and first due crews assisted with ventilation before returning a short time later.

DRYER FIRE CLOSE TO EXTENDING
Wednesday, June 24, 2009
-
On Tuesday evening, at approximately 1730 hours, the department was dispatched to a residence on Colgate Avenue for a reported dryer fire in the basement. A neighbor had seen smoke coming out of the garage doors and alerted the homeowner. Chief Murphy#230, Engine#232(OIC Hendrickson), Engine#233(OIC Graham),Engine#235, Truck#241(OIC Durkin) and Rescue #242(OIC Abma), responded to the scene. Upon Chief Murphy's arrival, he reported smoke showing out the garage doors.  Engine#232 arrived on scene moments later and sent a search crew into the basement. The dryer was located and the contents were burning. A water can was used to extinguish the fire. The dryer was removed from the home and the truck crew ventilated the smoke condition. Nice job to the alert neighbor for their quick action in stopping this before it extended.

"The Reign of Fire Continues" Another Structure Fire for the Bravest
Sunday, June 21, 2009
-
On Saturday, June 20, 2009,  at approximately 1610 hours, The department was dispatched to a reported basement fire on Long Drive. Chief Murphy#230 called in service. While en route, he was advised by the Police that they had a confirmed working fire. Chief Murphy requested his Fast Team assignment and a second alarm based on that information as well as information received from Deputy Chief Baker#237 on scene. Engine #233(OIC Forsyth), Engine#232(OIC Tanucilli),Engine#231(OIC Alnor),Truck#241(OIC T. Brock) and Rescue#242(OIC Vanderplaat) responded in. Chief Murphy arrived on scene, established command and reported that he had a large 2 1/2 story residential home with fire showing on the A-Alpha side and the B-Bravo side of the home.  He also reported to incoming crews that it was a basement fire and both the electrical panel inside and the outside meter were fully involved which was going to make fire attack difficult.  Initial crews completed a primary throughout all floors proving negative for victims. The Engine crew made an aggressive push into the basement and reported that they had fire rolling across just above the drop ceiling with popping and arching coming from the electrical panel.  The Engine crew was able to keep the fire in check and protect the basement stairwell without being in danger of any electrical hazards. The main body of fire could not be fought  until the power  to the home was secured by the utility company.  Due to this, the floor above the main body of fire was compromised and a partial collapse occurred causing the fire to spread upward above the panel into the first floor. Additional crews held the fire to that room only on the first floor. Once the fire was completely knocked down, extensive overhaul occurred and the utility company continued to secure their underground wiring.  A great job was done by all companies of Wyckoff and the Mutual Aid. The operation was well coordinated and completed in a safe manner. With the involvement of the electric, the outcome could have been worse.

Mutual Aid On Scene:   2nd Alarm Assignment: Franklin Lakes Engine, Midland Park Engine, Waldwick Tower Ladder, Ramsey Fast Team, HoHokus Fast Team and Hawthorne Cascade.

Coverage Assignment: Allendale Engine, Hawthorne Engine, Oakland Tower Ladder

Command Staff:  Chief on scene: 230 , Operations: 237 , Safety: 650 , Basement Division: 249 and Division #1: 349 and M/A Coord. Gordon M.

Garage Fire Puts Itself out!!
Earlier this week, the Volunteers were dispatched for a reported garage fire on Vassar Street. Upon arrival, Engine #232(OIC Capt Hendrickson), reported that he had  a two car detached garage with nothing showing.  Engine#231(OIC Vanderplaat), Truck#241(OIC Alvarez), Engine#233(OIC Graham) and Rescue#242(OIC Brock) all responded in as well. Upon investigation of the garage, all three walls had suffered extensive burn damage as well as the windows, the vehicle and other contents. The attic area of the garage had extensive heat remaining but,  no fire.  Crews chalked this one up in the win column since it was confined to the garage and burned itself out. You just never know what fire will do.

-
At 2:08am hours this morning, dispatch toned out a general alarm assignment for a reported smoke condition in one of the buildings on the campus of a health care facility on Sicomac Avenue.

Upon arrival of the Wyckoff Police Officers,  staff on scene were reporting a heavy smoke condition on the ground floor with a light smoke haze on the 1st floor living quarters.

Chief Murphy #230 signed into service and requested a full second alarm assignment to the scene due to extreme life hazards that exist in the building.

Engine #233 (OIC Lt. Forsyth), Tower Ladder #241 (OIC DC Rose), Engine #232 (OIC DC Graglia), Engine #235, Res2cue #242 and the remainder of the Wyckoff assignment responded into the scene.

As first due crews arrived,  it was determined that the cause and origin of the smoke condition was an electrical transformer that had shorted out and ignited.  Crews were able to quickly isolate the problem and the scene was downsized returning the mutual aid agencies.

Thank you to all of the mutual aid agencies that came out to assist.

Engine #232, Tower Ladder #241 and Rescue #242 arrived on scene on Franklin Avenue and conducted this investigation while Engine #233 and Engine #235 were re-directed to a third call for an activated fire alarm on Everett Avenue.

Just when three calls is not enough, WPD dispatch advised Chief Murphy of two more calls!   A homeonwer reported hearing a loud noise in the basement of her home when the power went out due to the downed power line on Wyckoff Avenue. Tower Laddder #241 and an engine were dispatched to this calls.   Just as units were clearing from Carlton Road, an activated fire alarm was received from a residence on Joshua Lane.

All alarms and incidents were found to be related to the power outage in the area and Wyckoff's Bravest were able to go back home and get some much needed rest.
